How high are the mountains in Belize, and how does this change the weather?
Tamrah Lozano
The Maya Mountains are a mountain range in Belize and eastern Guatemala.
The highest peaks are Doyle's Delight at 3,688 feet and Victoria Peak at 3,670 feet.
The elevation changes the weather and temperatures. For example in the Cayo district, the elevation of Santa Elena is high enough that is much cooler and humid than in the low lying coastal plains.

Victoria Peak, in the Maya Mountains is the highest mountain in Belize, at over 3,600 feet elevation. The town of San Ignacio is in Cayo, which is at the beginning of Victoria Peak’s spine. San Ignacio is an elevated mountain community similar to Boquete, Panama. San Ignacio is lovely. It is 5 kilometers away from the Guatemala border and it is cooler because of the elevation.

You will discover that location and elevation can positively influence weather in Belize. Some communities tucked into the foothills of the Maya Mountains enjoy their very own micro-climates
. Temperatures can vary noticeably - those communities at a higher elevation can be eight to ten degrees cooler than in lower lying areas of Belize. This can really impact your sweat equity! Belize's mountains definitely contribute to micro-shifts in Belize's weather. Ask about...

I don't know the exact height of Victoria Peak, but I can tell you that it is the highest mountain in Belize. Before the rainy season begins, we advertise group hiking on the Victoria Trail. You don’t really need to be a great hiker to get to the top, but it is recommended for you to be in very good shape. I know some people who are 80 years old and above who have done it.

Belize has a couple of small villages that are up in the hills, but not necessarily at the top of the mountain. There are a couple of hills in Belize where people live but are not really very elevated. Most of these small villages are in the western part of Belize, in the Cayo district. It's definitely cooler up in the hills.
