How many Americans and Canadians and other expats live in Chapala and Ajijic, Mexico?

I am not the expert on this matter but just in Chapala and Ajijic, there would be about 20,000 expats and those numbers really swell. I have seen these numbers triple during the high season.As a doctor, I notice during the low season, which is during summer months, that my business really takes a dive. Of those, probably about one-fourth to one-third are Canadian, British, German, Swiss or Australian. People from all over the world come to Ajijic because this is one of the world’s best climates. ...

In the wintertime the expat population doubles, and those are mostly Canadians.

The remaining 80% would be Mexican. But let me say, however, that the 20% of the population here that are expats has in increased the quality of living for almost every Mexican national who calls this home because the Americans are spending more money. If there weren’t for Americans, Canadians and Europeans here, this would be a poor little Mexican fishing village as opposed to what it is now; a cosmopolitan home for multi-nationals.

Out of the total number of expats living in the Lake Chapala area, about 60% of them live in Ajijic. The rest are divided in other places such as Jocotepec, San Juan Cosala, and on the other side of the lake. Out of the entire population of Ajijic, I would estimate that about 40% are expats. Ajijic is like Chinatown but we have foreigners. This is the “foreigntown” of Mexico.

The guesses I have heard tend to center on a population of perhaps 120,000 or so total inhabitants in the total “Lakeside” area, from Jocotepec to Chapala, with Ajijic about in the middle. Of those, perhaps 20% or so are expats, a percentage that will rise or fall somewhat significantly depending on the time of year.
