Children at the beach in Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingWe tend to have a little bit more mosquitoes in El Valle de Anton just because of the rains that we get here. Our house is closer to the Coronado side so where we are, we don’t get as much mosquitoes as in other areas of El Valle. The nice thing is that when it is dry season, there is not that much water in El Valle so there are no mosquitoes, either. Also, when the wind is blowing, there are no mosquitoes.

From December through April, there are not really any mosquitoes around unless you are on the beach because then you will find the little no-see-ums or sand flies. During the first quarter of the year, there are no mosquitoes, which is awesome.

El Valle de Anton Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingDuring the dry season, the months of December through April, the mosquitoes and other bugs and insects in El Valle de Anton, Panama are almost NON EXISTENT.

I am extremely allergic to mosquitoes and so is my 4 year old daughter, so this question is extremely important to me.  The tiniest mosquito bite can quickly become a source of nagging for days for us.

We lived for 18 months about 10 km( about 6 miles) from the center of El Valle in Altos del Maria.  Altos del Maria is the exactly the same type of climate and general area as El Valle-- higher altitude with cooler climate in a rainforest area.  During these dry months, the bugs are pretty non existent because of the north winds that predominantly blow during this time.  However during the rainy season and when the winds stop blowing, it is something that you must watch out for, especially during the dawn and dusk hours.

First off you have to remember that when talking about mosquitos and other bugs in El Valle de Anton, you're living in a rain forest.  That being said, the mosquitoes at my home in Arkansas and in Tennessee were so bad at dusk you had to go inside.  Down here we sit out on the porch and in the hot tub and even sleep outside in our hammocks and are not bothered by them at all.  Each year we have a bunch of small black flies that come out that are everywhere for about two weeks and then you don't see them any more.  Also during a week period you will see flying termites looking for new places to set up housekeeping and they too are gone very soon.  Now as to ants, well that's another story.  We have tons of those, from fire ants to cutter ants and you will never get rid of those.  Nothing here goes to waste which I like.  If a insect dies or you drop a bit of food on the front porch there will be a whole crew of ants to clean up your mess.
