Statue of Jesus Christ near an electrical wire, Casco Viejo, Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International Living
Yes, electricity is reliable in El Valle, and yes, there are blackouts as well. We’re doing a lot better now. If you asked me this a few years ago, I would have told you that we had electricity about 80% of the time. Now, we have electricity 95% of the time without any problems. The electric company recently replaced electric poles, put in new transformers, took out old wires and put in new wires. They’re doing their best to meet the demands of the community up here. The biggest problem we have here is power surges, so you should have a surge protector on anything electronic, no matter what.

Electricity goes out once in a while for five minutes. When these five-minute blackouts come along, it’s because they have to shut the power off so they can connect new equipment or clean something. I have no problem with that as long as they are conducting their maintenance. Just make sure you have back up batteries for everything.

Yes we do have power here in El Valle.  I know you are thinking we are in the middle of nowhere without lights other than what’s provided by a fire.

The whole country of Panama right now has ordered all places in the country to shut off air conditioning from 1 till 5 because they don't have enough power.  Well, then why did we pay millions of dollars to build two new hydro plants? And yes they are up and running, but someone forgot to build the transmission lines to bring that new power to the whole country.   Oh my, another billion and another three years, and we all will be just fine.

Eight years ago, the power would go out at least once a day.  If you had a alarm clock that runs off of the electricity in the wall, forget about it. You will wake up a hour late and the clock  will be flashing.  Of course, once you get to where you should have been, you’re right on time, because no one here goes by time.  Even lawyers.  If your lawyer states he will be there at 1 PM, if he is there by 2 PM, you’re lucky.

El Valle de Anton, is an extinct volcanic crater, the area has been a favorite week end location for Panamanians over the years, There has been an increase in expatriate community due to the mild weather and pleasant surroundings. Electricity has not been a problem, I have not heard of any real blackout unless there has been a severe storm that had and effect on the power lines. In fact  I have never heard mention that there ever was a serious blackout.
