Gatun's Canal Zone style sign, Jadwin Road – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingExpats are treated like kings in Pedasi.  Even though some Panamanians do speak English, some of them do not, but they really like tourists. Panamanians are always eager to help tourists with anything. Panamanians always help tourists with directions or any kind of assistance that they need.

Americans and Panamanians have had strong relations for over a hundred years now, so it’s quite normal for Panamanians to have Americans or expats around. It’s really nothing strange. In fact, Pedasi was a US military base for 40 years so people are quite used to seeing Americans in town.

Expats are treated very well by the people in Pedasi; the people of Pedasi are happy people. I only know of one Expat guy who is not very happy because of the noise. As you know, people in Pedasi have dogs and chickens and this guy is not very happy about that so he decided to build a house outside the town where he has only a few neighbors. He built a fence around his house to keep the animals away. He goes to town to shop and then goes back to his house a few miles away. He likes Pedasi; it’s just the noise that he is not happy about.

The local Pedasi people are very welcoming to the expats.

The relationship between the Americans and other expats and the existing Pedasi community is really nice.  The local Panamanians are helpful, and everyone will greet you, for example, saying Buenos dias (“good morning”).

Not only do the local Pedasi residents know what a great town they have and want to preserve its charm, but so do the expats, so they work together, expats and local Pedasi residents, as one community.  This is really special, and something that you may not see in other places in Panama.  It is a really nice relationship that the expats and local Pedasi community has, to the point that sometimes, you can’t really tell who is a local and who is an expat, other than, perhaps, by their language.

In general, the expats in Panama are trying to learn Spanish, because they want to feel more a part of the Pedasi community, and the local Pedasi people also want to make them feel part of the community.

I think that some of the expats in Pedasi feel very welcome and some of them at times don’t.  It just depends on the people.  Some of the locals here may feel that one of the reasons why the prices keep rising is because of the expats, which makes it harder for the locals to afford the things they used to.  Of course, this is natural for a tourist area.  But mostly, the locals are very welcoming and very nice.

Americans living in Pedasi, Azuero Peninsula Panama are treated with respect, as are all foreign imigrants.  American expats are welcomed with smiles generally and can fit into the town activities with no problem, as long as they also respect the way of life there. i have high school friends from Australia that live in Pedasi and love the place and have made several good, local friends.

In addition, people living in Pedasi experience a much healthier lifestyle than the city.  Hopefully this won't change.
