There is no scuba or snorkeling spot in Boquete. The closest you can go to for scuba diving and snorkeling in Isla Coiba, in the Pacific Ocean. Isla Coiba is the largest island in Central America.  To get there from Boquete, it will take you about four hours to drive to Santa Catalina in the Azuero Peninsula and then another hour on a boat to Isla Coiba.

From Boquete, you can also go snorkeling in Bocas Del Toro (all told, about 4 hours away). There are coral reefs in Bocas that people visit for snorkeling.

Hermit Crab in Gulf of Chiriqui, Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingOur little town of Boquete is located in the mountains of Panama so there’s no diving or snorkeling here.  However, because Panama is a narrow country with over 1,000 miles of coastline, you’re never far from the ocean.

The easiest, and in my opinion the best, access for world class diving and snorkeling in Panama is a little community called Boca Chica that just over an hour’s drive from Boquete

Located in an incredibly lush and tropical setting, Boca Chica is a little known gem that is the gateway to the Gulf of Chiriqui Marine Sanctuary.  Most of the Gulf of Chiriqui (pictured above) was turned into a national park by previous governments and the islands and reefs in the gulf have some of the most spectacular diving, snorkeling and sport fishing in Panama.  There are a series of islands located a few miles offshore that have coconut palm lined, white sand beaches, crystal clear blue water and vibrant reefs teeming with underwater life.  Getting there is fairly easy using one of the water taxi services or tour companies located in Boca Chica.  You can also arrange trips through the tour operators located in Boquete.

For the more adventurous and advanced divers, a trip to the Coiba National Park is a must do.  Isla Coiba is the largest island in Panama and breathtakingly beautiful.  Divers and adventure seekers from around the world travel to Coiba for the diving and the undisturbed natural setting.  Multi-day trips can be arranged through diving operators in Boca Chica or through other tour operators in the area.

Bocas del Toro ocean at night – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingFrom Boquete, probably the nearest place to go diving, scuba or snorkeling would be Boca Chica, which is on the Pacific side and is about an hour and 30-minute drive from Boquete. The cost to scuba dive is  US $150 for 3-4 hours. That also includes the equipment and the water taxi which will take you to the areas where you can go the diving and to the snorkelling excursions near the reefs.

Another place on the Pacific side would be Las Olas, about an hour away by car, located just south of the city of David. There, you will see dolphins jumping out of the crystal clear water. You can also see the fish and crabs if you look beneath the water.

You can also go to Bocas del Toro (pictured above), which is a three and a half hour-drive from Boquete. The advantage of going to Bocas del Toro, which is on the Caribbean side, is that the water is beautifully clear.

Boquete is inland so, in order to go diving, you would need to go to one of the beaches outside of David, the closest city to Boquete on the coast, about a 40 minutes drive from Boquete. There are some decent spots for diving there.
