David Berger of Tradewinds Hospitality at Orchid Bay – Best Places In The World To Retire User Account
Screen porch, Orchid Bay, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingA housekeeper in Corozal who comes in for 6-7 hours a day typically charges about BZ $40 (US $20). Housekeepers in Corozal are pretty thorough and generally do a good job. The housekeepers follow instructions, and they work hard. There aren’t a lot of opportunities for people in Corozal, so when they do find someone who wants to have their house cleaned, they appreciate the opportunity and work hard.

In hiring housekeepers in Corozal, we typically start with people whom we already know and trust, and usually they have someone in their family whom they would give the opportunity to.

A lot of the local people don’t have the same kind of house that we would expect in the US, and it’s pretty normal for some people to have dirt floors in their house. That’s why sometimes, when the a local housekeeper would come into the house of an American for the first time, they think, “Wow! It’s already clean!”

You have to train the housekeepers in Corozal a little bit. They don’t have a lot of knowledge about chemicals, or that bleach can stain things, etc. We often use our own chemicals and show them which ones to use.

Mahogoney staircase, Corozal, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingIn Corozal, a housekeeper who comes in 5 days a week and works from 7 AM – 4 PM would charge you BZ $150 (US $75) a week. That’s less than the gardeners are making, but this quote is based on what the locals are paying. For an expat, it would probably cost around BZ $250 Belize (US $125) a week.

Over time, once they get to be “in the know,” expats may be able to get someone for the local price, but then that would mean having to fire the housekeeper they had, and because everybody’s related, word about them being cheap and trying to take advantage of a local person is going to get around.

Staff at Cerros Sand Resort, Corozal, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingYou can get a maid in Corozal for BZ $20 or US $10 a day. They do a pretty good job.

I personally do not like to hire service because I do everything myself when I can. It is not that they do not do a good job but it is my personal preference to do everything if I can. When I get busy here with our business then I do hire local help. I pay the housekeeper BZ $20 or US $10 per day and they do clean for about 4.5 hours. If I do heavy cleaning, I pay them BZ $40 or US $20 per day, and that includes doing laundry.
