dental care san miguel de allende – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingDental care is so affordable in San Miguel de Allende that many Americans and even Canadians visit San Miguel de Allende for both major dental preventative care as well as cosmetic dentistry.

A medical visit generally costs about 600 pesos ($31 USD) and my dentist spends 90 minutes to provide a very thorough dental cleaning procedure!  And the signs are generally more professional than this smile-inducing sign here!

Smiling young woman with perfect teeth – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingIndeed, dental care is about  60% less in Mexico than what it is in the USA.

There are great dentists here in Mexico and probably 6 bad ones who prey on Gringos. Nevertheless, most dentists here are honest and professional.

Three years ago, I came out of retirement and opened a dental clinic here in San Miguel de Allende in order to help my dental charity treat the poor and elderly.  I am still amazed  that fees are so low.  For example, in my practice in the USA, my fee for a porcelain to metal crown was $1,500 USD. Here its around $350.00 USD.

Americans coming to Mexico for treatment get value for money.  Most dentists here use the same materials that US dentists use and still the cost is much lower here. I for one use only ADA recommended  materials in my clinic.

I know that some  Americans coming here for treatment bring their own gloves and needles. Most dentists have up to date equipment and good sterilization so no need to be afraid.

I spend a lot of time in Texas which is the Medicaid capital of the world and it amazes me to see elderly Americans walking around without teeth because they cannot afford high cost of dental treatment. This really breaks my heart.  I say that they should all take a 7 day trip to Mexico (and in particularly, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, which was voted the Best City in the World by Conde Nast in 2014) and have their dental treatment taken care of.

Smiling faces on the golf course at Ventanas de San Miguel, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingI’m terrified of dentists so I don’t go as often as I should. It costs 500 pesos (US $25) for a dental cleaning and the dental care in San Miguel de Allende has been really good.

It's been a while since I've had any substantial dental care, but you can get really top-notch care for crowns or a couple dental fillings for about 1,500 pesos ($75). I am absolutely satisfied with the quality of dental care in San Miguel de Allende and the costs are similar to general medical care here, which is a lot less than what the cost would be in the United States.

Graphic from Odonto-Imagen Clínica Dental, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingDental care in Mexico is known to be very good and affordable. A lot of the dentists here are trained in the US and come back and practice here.

We do not have dental insurance but I go to the dentist every 3 or 4 months to get my teeth cleaned. I’ve had lots of work done such as teeth replacement, repairing cavities, and in my experience, the dental care in San Miguel de Allende has been great. I pay 500 pesos to get my teeth cleaned, which is around US $25. If I had my teeth cleaned in the US, it would cost me around $160. That was the price in the US to get your teeth cleaned when I came here 12 years ago so it might be $250 now. I had a crown here in San Miguel that cost around $200, which costs about $1,500 in the US.

My dentist is great. I love her and I have been going to her ever since I’ve been here. If you go to a dentist and you didn’t like the job, you could go and find another one. Some people even go to Celaya or Leon or other cities to find better dentists. Celaya is an hour away from San Miguel de Allende and Leon is an hour and a half away by car. Some go to Queretaro, which is about an hour away from San Miguel. Queretaro is a big city that has first grade dental care available at very low prices. Queretaro is the fastest growing city in Latin America. It is also one of the biggest cities in Mexico.

Poster for Consultorio Dental, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThe dental care in San Miguel de Allende is wonderful! There are lots of great dentists in San Miguel de Allende. My sister flies down here with her husband and gets all their fillings replaced, teeth whitened and other dental procedures done and she hasn’t even spent what she would have spent for one crown in Canada! They used to visit the dentist every day but now they make the appointments for her in advance so they can do it every other day. They have found that several of these dentists that they have a good relationship with check you out pretty much for free and give you an analysis of what he thinks should be done in your mouth and what is the priority. They sort of work in phases so they know how much could be accomplished in one sitting and onto the next. They will tell you the procedure and what they would do next, and how much it would cost so you can guage what you can afford. They will do it as per a timing that suits you and the dentist or for how long you could stay here in Mexico. The dental care here is excellent.

A cleaning here in San Miguel wouldn’t cost more than 500 pesos ($29) and would take around 45 minutes. A root canal costs between 1,200 and 1,500 pesos (around $70 to $87). A crown costs between 1,200 pesos ($70) and 2,500 pesos ($145).

Dental Age, S.A. de C.V, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingDental care in San Miguel de Allende is a growing industry because there is a lot of demand in part because a lot of Americans and Canadians come down to San Miguel to get dental treatment.

Dental care here is incredibly inexpensive compared to the US. As an example, a professional cleaning that would take an hour using top, state-of-the-art equipment would cost you about 500 pesos (US $27). Dental procedures here in San Miguel de Allende cost from 500 to 1,000 pesos ($27 to $54).

Dental care has been an interesting industry in San Miguel de Allende in that we have had at least two national events for dentists in San Miguel de Allende. The latest one was led by some of the top dentists in San Miguel who have been notable figures in the Mexican dental industry and were able to bring in those national congresses of dentists.

Compared to the dental care in places where I’ve lived such as London, Barcelona, and Munich, the dental care here in San Miguel de Allende is just a fraction of the cost and you will get a much better service here. Dentists and physicians here in San Miguel de Allende are much more human so they would become your friends and you would know that they really care.
