Dentist Diana Navarro Zapata, Merida, Yucatan, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingDental care throughout Mexico is well known to be very, very affordable. I just had a full teeth cleaning and x-rays and I don’t think the fee was more than $20.

In my opinion, the quality of dental care here in Yucatan is superior to the quality in Santa Barbara, California, which is where I’m from.  The dentists and the doctors here in Yucatan spend much more time with you. It’s actually the dentist doing the cleaning rather than a hygienist, as would be the case in California. The actual dentist takes the time to converse with you, discover your problem, take your x-rays, and do the cleaning.  The standard of care here in Yucatan in many cases is much superior than anything in the US. It’s certainly cost-wise; you can’t even compare.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingDental care in Playa del Carmen is excellent. And I should know. My husband is a dentist and I managed his office for twenty five years. The dentists here are very well trained, have the latest advanced equipment, including panoramic and digital x-rays, and even the computerized cerec machines that make customized crowns. They are diligent about periodontal disease, do frequent implants, and use excellent sterilization procedures. All in all, many of them are as good as or better than any dentist in the United States. Except they cost a third of the price. In fact, dental tourism in Mexico deserves its popularity.

Dentist from Botello Dental Center, Playa del Carmen, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingDental care in Yucatan is top notch. I have a Canadian friend from Calgary who brings his mother down to Mexico just to take her to a dentist in Merida (the largest city in the state of Yucatan). He told me that dental cost here in Mexico is easily 50% less than it is in Canada.

One of my colleagues here at Top Mexico Real Estate who is from Arizona had some problems with his teeth that he had fixed here in Mexico.  He showed me before and after pictures and it was a tremendous change.

I am surprised that here in Playa del Carmen, there is a dentist’s office in every other block. It seems that you can find many different dentists here. This dentist that we have here in Playa del Carmen trained up in Texas and now she practices here. The dentist has a very professional office that is top notch, yet there is a lot of cost savings that can be realized between Canada and here in Mexico and I’m very confident that it’s the same cost savings compared to the US.

Beach at Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingDental care in Yucatan is great. Even people from Mexico City come here because it is very cheap compared to the cost of dental care in their area. We have a lot of cruises that arrive at the port of Progreso (in the state of Yucatan). Most of the crew in the cruises comes to Merida (the largest city in the state of Yucatan) to have dental work done. They know that health care and dental care here are very good. Progreso is located around 45 minutes away from Merida on a four-lane highway. There was an agreement with major cruise lines that there should be a center for them in Progreso so that they don’t have to drive all the way down to Merida. So Progreso is a health and dental care center in that area.

Dentist and staff in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThe dental care in the Yucatan is 100% perfect. I have friends and relatives who come down to have their dental work done here all the time.  I’m planning to get veneers on my teeth, which is going to cost me about $1,600, whereas in the States I would be looking at many thousands.

My aunt’s half sister came down a year ago to have 19 crowns done. The dentist here told her that she had good teeth that he didn’t want to work on, but my sister insisted.  This tells me is that the dentist really knows what he’s doing, and he doesn’t want to do what he figures would be unnecessary work just to make money.  In the end, the dentist did the work because of my sister’s insistence.  The total bill was only about $2,300, for the entire work of 19 crowns.  He did such a good job that when my sister smiled I didn’t recognize her.

When I visited back in the States, I went to have a dentist double check the work I had done down here in Mexico. He told me that the dentist here had done excellent work.  Then, he just started picking my mouth apart and the next thing I know, he’s got this proposal for over $17,000 to reconstruct my mouth. I could not believe it. Instead of asking me what hurts or what bothered me or what were my concerns, he just went in and thought he would do a whole makeover. As a result, I don’t think he had my best interest at heart in comparison to the dentists down here.

Now, you have to bear in mind, each town or city has different dentists. I have two really good dentists down here. One dentist is for my 16 year old son who does orthodontic procedures. The other dentist I use is for adults where I send my friends and family.  The dentists’ main concern is what your issues are, not what they can do to improve your lifestyle by charging a lot. They’re not interested in beautifying you; they just want to help you to feel better, to help you care for your teeth. They still, however, do a good job on the cosmetic procedures, but they’re not looking to get rich off of you.  Also, they don’t charge you differently based on if you’re a native or an expat.

All my experiences with dental care are in Progresso, which is a small fishing village in the state of Yucatan.  In Merida, which is a city of over a million people about half an hour from here, you will pay more, but still much less than US prices.  For example, my aunt’s half sister may have had to pay slightly more than $3,000 for her 19 crowns, as opposed to the $2,300 she paid here in Progresso.

Dr. Javier Patron, dentist in Yucatan, Merida, Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThe dental care here in Yucatan costs about 15 cents to the Canadian dollar but it is far superior to the dental care that you would get in Canada. I just had a discussion with a Canadian a little while ago who is coming to Merida (the largest city in the state of Yucatan) to get his dental work done. His entire holiday is going to be paid for with the savings compared to what he would have had to pay in Canada and he will go home with money in his pocket.

I got my teeth cleaned and had an x-ray done recently for only $25. If you want to get caps, expect it to be around $200 here in Mexico, while it costs $1,500 in Canada, and about $1,000 in the US.  Here’s an example.  Javier Patron, the dentist we go to, was trained in Mexico and then went to Texas, where he practiced dentistry for two or three years. He then moved back to Merida, where he has four separate clinics. If you are abroad, he will make an estimate of how much it would cost to fix your teeth along with photos of your teeth over the Internet. Then he will book your appointments when you arrive. Let’s say you arrive here in Mexico on the first of the month.  He would book your first appointment on second day. If you are here for only two weeks, he will make sure that no matter what you want done, it will be done by the time that you leave.

Dental care is a huge industry here. Probably 90% of Javier’s clients are foreigners from all over the world. The quality of dental care here is better than the quality of dental care in Canada because the service is far superior. I could phone Javier today and say that I broke a tooth and that I need to see him tomorrow morning. He would book me at 9 AM, not just to check and book me for next month, but to fix the problem when I get there. These people are amazing. The only thing they can sell is service so they know that they have to be the best. Javier advertises all of the US and Canada on websites. Many doctors and dentists in Merida do the same.

Some people find it hard to believe that you can get good quality dental care for way less because they don’t realize the different way things are done here in Mexico.  Javier tells me that he overpays his dentists. He can hire a dentist for $50 a day, and they work 12 hours a day. In Canada, they make that same amount an hour. Here in Mexico, Javier doesn’t have to spend $150,000 to $200,000 a year for insurance. His rent is not $5,000 a month. Everything is cheaper here in Mexico and that is why their services do not cost as much as in other countries like Canada or the US.
