Resting in the water at Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingNow here's a real sleeper of an outdoor Adventure. Isla Contoy is a National Marine Park located offshore northwest of Cancun. Its a nature and bird lovers Paradise. It only allows 300 people per day to visit  so its NOT like Xcaret and the like. "Muy Tranquilo"!  It has a great onsite marine museum, nature trails through the mangroves and excellent beach with a friendly resident ray!

Small groups get first class service, including pickups from all Cancun and Riviera Maya hotels and resorts. You also get to do some great snorkeling nearby Contoy at the actual start of the Mesoamerican reef which stretches down the coast of Mexico into Central America. A  great shore BBQ lunch and drinks are included. Its a full day to really get close to nature birdlife and Mother Nature's Aquarium.Map showing Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingPalm trees on the shore of Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingLecture about Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingPlaque about Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingStingray with boy in Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingBeach with palm trees on Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingBoat with tourists off Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingStingray in clear water off Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingMan carving dinner at Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingCrabs in the water in Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingRiver in Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingAerial view of Isla Contoy – Best Places In The World To Retire – International Living Tour runs year-round

Snorkeling next to a whale shark in Mexico – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingProbably the most exciting outdoor adventure occurs near Cancun every summer from June 1 - Sept 15. It's "WHALE SHARK" season.

Each summer these harmless giants return to the plankton-rich waters where they gorge on the smorgasbord of food. Organized tours such as Cancun Whale Shark Tours run every summer taking adventure seekers out to actually snorkel alongside these docile animals, some up to 25' long (kinda like swimming alongside a school bus or 18 wheeler).

Its fun and safe for the entire family 5 years old and older. You get outfitted with full snorkel gear plus life jacket for flotation. You snorkel two at a time with a licensed in-water guide. Lunch and beverages are provided along with roundtrip transfers from all Cancun and Riviera Maya resorts. Its an amazing adventure to be so close to these docile  vegetarians. Check it out! Cenote on land available near Tulum Neach, Yucatan, Mexicoj – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingHere in Yucatan, adventure travel is one of the main businesses for a lot of people. We have lots of opportunities to experience cenotes. A “cenote” is an underground river. In the entirety of the Yucatan area, we don’t have the regular rivers that you would see back home. All of our rivers are underground, so the whole area is like Swiss cheese. Every now and then these rivers will open up, and that’s what’s called a cenote. It looks like a quarry and it has constantly moving water but you don’t notice it because it’s moving very slowly.  People go swimming and diving in these cenotes.  They create lots of caves. Divers go into these caves with ropes telling them where they’re going.  They’ll go for hours underground. People often go and swim in cenotes because it’s all limestone rock. The mineral content in the water is extremely high so when you go in there you feel revived, and your hair and your skin are soft when you get out. Going swimming in a cenote is a very healthy thing to do.

There are lots of tourist parks for doing ziplining.  We have dry cenotes which are essentially just caves so you can go in the dry cenotes and drive four wheelers through them. You can do hiking through the cenotes into the caves where there are bats everywhere. These cenotes will open to large caverns of stalactites and stalagmites, which is very interesting.

There are a lot of places to go nearby. We’ve got highlands that are nearby where one of them is a spot to see the whale sharks. So you can go swim with the whale sharks, which look more like whales than anything, but they’re about the size of a garage. So you can swim with these giant creatures that only eat is plankton.  They open their mouths wide as they’re swimming and they just inhale the plankton so they’re not dangerous.  They’re extremely friendly and you can go right beside them. You can also look at the wild flamingos. This is all through the Riviera Maya and as well as the Merida area.

Another thing I didn’t mention is the ruins. We’ve got many different areas for Mayan ruins. We’ve got Chichen Itza, which is one of the wonders of the world now and it’s one of the most impressive ruins structure you can go see. You can spend the whole day visiting.  It’s very interesting.
