Cayo Espanto, a private island resort, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThere are very few bugs and insects in Cayo. We have practically none on our property because we chose to be on the hilltop where there is no standing water and we get a good breeze. If you go down to the river or into the heavy jungle where most of the resorts are located then you can have mosquitoes. Even in downtown San Ignacio, you can walk around and not see any mosquitoes.

The mosquitoes in Texas are much worse than here in Cayo.  When we lived in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye we never went out towards sunset without mosquito spray unless we were dressed in long dresses or long pants and long sleeves.

Macal_River_at_San_Ignacio – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingWe’re in luck here in Cayo. We get very, very few mosquitoes. This is the main reason people don’t live on the coast. On the coast, when the breeze stops, the mosquitoes on the Cayes are unbearable. What is worse are the sand flies or the sand fleas on the coast.  They get on your feet and it drives you crazy. We have no sand flies in Cayo and very few mosquitoes. It’s much nicer to be here. I stay outside in the evening and I have no problem.

Some houses have screens on their windows, but most don’t.   I’ve never used that in my life.  I guess the reason why we don’t get many bug is due to the water. The coast gets load of mosquitos. I’ve been to the coast, and in certain areas, it drives me crazy; unbearable mosquitoes. I don’t know how they live there.

property with Macal River frontage , Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingI’ve lived in Cayo / San Ignacio, Belize and I’ve lived on the coast and in my opinion, up here in the hills, there is less standing water. The waters are all moving. Mosquitoes are not a problem here. That doesn’t mean that you would have your house without mosquito netting on it because you still do get some mosquitoes, but it is nothing like living on the coast. If you live on the coast, the islands, or on one of the atolls, the mosquitoes are a completely different thing there. They are counted in the hundreds instead of tens.

When I go out, I never use mosquito repellant. I don’t get bitten by mosquitoes. The other day, I walked around with clients in the bush and they told me that they’ve been bitten three times. I had not even heard a mosquito yet. Three times is not bad compared to when you live in one of the atolls where you get bitten by mosquitoes a lot. I used to live on Turneffe Atoll, which is the largest atoll in the northern hemisphere and out there, you don’t slap mosquitoes, you scrape them off!
