Tiffany Swift of Rentals In Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire User Account
river Cayo District, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingIt is safe to drink water in the towns located in the Cayo district. I know many people that drink the water from the tap here. Personally, I don't drink water from the tap, but that's my personal preference. I see a lot of people that do drink it. I would say it’s safe because I don't see anybody getting sick from it.

If you go to a restaurant and they serve you a glass of water with ice, it would be safe because they would be serving you purified water. Even the ice is made out of purified water. When you take home vegetables from the store, you can wash them with tap water and it’s fine. Many people, including expats, cook with the water from the tap as well without issue.

Chalilo Dam, Cayo District, BelizeWe always recommend bottled water while traveling around the country of Belize.  If you drink out of the tap anywhere in Belize, you could get sick.  The nicer restaurants always provide pure water and pure ice cubes.

Oldham with bottled water for her house warming party, Cayo District, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingAbsolutely! It is safe to drink the water in the Cayo District.

One of the things that’s really nice about Belize is that we don’t have a lot of industries here that pollute the air or the water. So the water is very safe.

For me, I personally drink bottled water because I consume a lot of it but to drink the local water is not an issue. I don’t worry at all even when I go to restaurants and ask for a drink with ice cubes, which are made from tap water. We wash vegetables and fruits using tap water and we’re not worried at all. It’s safe to drink the water here in the Cayo District. I do the same thing in the US; I drink bottled water there and it’s just my personal preference.

River running through Cayo District, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingIt is safe to drink the water in Cayo District / San Ignacio, Belize area but a lot people prefer not to because it has a significant amount of chlorine in it. Some people still drink tap water. I do and I have never gotten sick. I grew up drinking straight from the tap and I never had any problem. I have lived in Belize since I was one year old.

Generally, the expats and tourists who come here do not get sick when they drink the water.

A lot of the people who come here do not drink the water out of the tap any more since a dam on the river was built. The rumor is that it’s not safe to drink the water from it because there is mercury in the water. But it was never proven that there is mercury in the water.

Normally, if you ask for water in a restaurant in San Ignacio, they will give you purified water. The vegetables and fruits that are served are usually washed in tap water but it’s never been a problem.
