duPlooy's Jungle Lodge in Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingTo get a gardener in the Cayo district costs around US $15 to $20 for a full day. They would clean up your garden, prune your trees, pull away the leaves, rake up the leaves and mow the grass.

We pay for gardeners once a week or so. Gardeners are pretty inexpensive here in Cayo but they would do whatever you ask them to do. They're very honest people.

Virginia Krohn of Villa Cayo Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire User Account
Villa CAYO resort, Cayo, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingI have a couple of gardeners and a maid here in Cayo. The maid works 6 hours a day and receives $30.00BZ for the day (US $15).  She only washes windows when my gardener helps her with the screens but she also helps with cooking and dishes when she has time.

Both of my gardeners speak fluent English and are very dependable.  One receives $40 BZ (US $20) a day for working 8 to 9 hours a day. He can use a weed eater, a lawn mower, and a machete. My other gardener has a little more education and can do just about anything including fixing the equipment.  He makes a good foreman when we have a small crew and he can work just about any phase of construction. He receives $50 Belize ($25) a day.

$25 to $40 Belize (US $12.50 to $20) is the average price that people here pay gardeners.  The less expensive gardeners are usually legal or illegal Guatemalans that do not speak English. They will work for 8 to 9 hours a day and generally know how to run a weed eater, chop the weeds, and use the lawn mower but are a higher risk factor.  Most do not have permanent homes or families here and they are the highest risk for your personal safety and theft.  Native Belizeans are meek, family oriented, peaceful people that can become your best friend.

Overlooking the gardens at Vanilla Hills Lodge, Cayo, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThe salary of gardeners in Cayo depends on how skilled they are. A helper or a beginner would get around $30 to $35 Belize (US $15 to US $17.50). A skilled gardener earns around $60 Belize (US $30) per day.

There are lots of skilled and motivated people here in Cayo but after all, we are in a Caribbean country. Part of the Caribbean culture is being laid back so you should also expect a laid back attitude with lower productivity than you would expect in North America. The quality of the work varies on a case-by-case basis. You have to search for a while for someone who does good quality work. Most of the time, your first gardener won’t be your last one.

Usually, you would have to supply the tools that the gardeners need to do their job. Some of them bring have their own tools, but these gardeners are usually the ones who charge more.

Wedding at gardens at Chaa Creek, Cayo District, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThe cost to get a gardener in the Cayo area is around US $70 to $95 a week. It’s the same as the cost to get a gardener anywhere in the country of Belize.

The price also depends on the skill of the gardener you are getting. Some have actually studied the craft while some just studied at home.

If you just need the gardener to come over for just a day in a week, you would pay around $20 for a day’s work. The price may vary depending on the size of property that you have. If you have a small garden or a small yard, you’re looking at paying around $20 daily.

Jonathan Lohr of Ceiba Realty Ltd. – Best Places In The World To Retire User Account
Esperanza, Cayo, Belize, home – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingNormally, you can get a gardener / all around handyman in the Cayo / San Ignacio area in Belize for US $15 to $20 for a day. He will work on your lawn, trim the trees and shrubs, take out the garbage, and be a handyman. Normally, a gardener works 8 hours a day; from 7 AM to 4 PM or 8 AM to 5 PM, with an hour off for lunch.

If you want someone who is a skilled gardener in San Ignacio, it’s going to be more expensive because they will probably need their own vehicle and bring in their tools. You will probably end up spending more like $40 to $50 for one day, during which they will trim flowers, plants, and trees, but it will not be for a whole 8-hour day.
