Paul Smith of Placencia Mini Storage – Best Places In The World To Retire User Account
Placencia Mini Storage sign written in the national language of Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThe official language of Belize is English and you (and I, because I speak no other language) can get by speaking only English. However, the language of the street is Belizean Creole. It is the most popular speech in Placencia.

Residents on private island at La Placencia, Placencia, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingEnglish is the official language of Belize. You can definitely get by speaking English, not only in Placencia but also anywhere in Belize. Belize is the only country in the Caribbean where English is the predominant language. They also speak Creole, which is broken English and Spanish.

Everyone speaks English, which really places Placencia as one of the top retirement spots to consider. I don’t need Google Translator to speak the language in Placencia. This brings down your defense mechanism dramatically. You feel safer in a country like Belize when you are in an area like Placencia where everyone speaks English. It’s worth its weight in gold; priceless. All the contracts and legal documents and any dealings with the government will all be in English.

In terms of real estate contracts, what makes it even better in Belize is that Belize is part of the British Commonwealth. That makes the adjustment of moving to Belize very simple because Belize follows the British Commonwealth rules. Buying real estate in Placencia is the same as buying real estate in Florida, New York, Arizona, or even Canada for that matter. You get the deed, the title, the physical ownership and this is different from the rest of the Caribbean where one doesn’t know what one is buying or who owns what.

The language that is most often spoken in Placencia is English. However, when local Belizeans talk to each other, they speak their local language, which is Creole. Creole is a combination of US English and Caribbean. It sounds like Jamaican English. The words are not different; they are English, but pronounced differently.

A typical American who does not speak any Creole at all and has never even heard of it, would still be able to get by in Placencia. You would be able to understand some words and miss others because they are pronounced differently, but overall, expats do get by with just English in Placencia.
