Kids enjoying the Caribbean off the private island belonging to The Placencia, Placencia, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThere aren’t as many expats in the village of Placencia as one would think. The expats are a little father out, for example towards and in Spanish River.

The expats in Placencia have their own style and their own group. They get along. There are a lot of expats on the Placencia Peninsula. There are a lot of Americans, Europeans and Chinese in Placencia. Belize is getting very eclectic, as is Placencia. When you go to a restaurant, you meet people from all over, and not just from the United States.

Expats play an important role in Placencia. They tend to be more conservative free market, from an American perspective. They think outside the box. They understand that they should have a Plan B in life because who knows if one will be able to afford to retire in the United States or Europe for that matter. They tend to understand this so they complement their portfolio, not only with stocks and real estate that they have in the United States but with some real estate holdings in tax friendly countries like Belize as well. At the end of the day, they have the option of retiring.

I have been to Placencia 80 to 90 times in 12 years and I’m never bored. I learn something new every time I go down to Placencia. I’m building my second home and probably my retirement home down there.  The more you’re down there, the more you love the country and it’s very addicting.

Placencia, Belize expats on a sailboat – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingIt is hard to tell exactly how many expats live in Placencia because the expat population is about 1,000 people, but those are the people who live here in Placencia 12 months out of the year. We get a larger population of expats during winter; those are expats who own homes here in Placencia, but they only stay here during the cold months in North America.

The expat population has probably increased by 100% from the time we started living here in Placencia, since 2008.
