Paul Smith of Placencia Mini Storage – Best Places In The World To Retire User Account
Belize River, south of Placencia, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingI've been told that the water in Placencia is the safest water to drink in all of Central America. I believe that, too. I personally think it is better than the water in the States where I'm from, Berlin, Maryland. You can taste the chemicals in the water where I'm from. The water here tastes like JUST water. I cannot taste anything that may have been added.

That being said there is store bought reverse osmosis water available in all the stores. A 5 gal. bottle cost about $6 bz or $3 us. That is the highest quality you can get and it's affordable.

Balcony overlooking the water at The Placencia Hotel and Residences, Placencia, Belize, – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingIn our project in Placencia, it is very safe to drink the water. We have our own water company and three artesian wells. When people come to our project, they either stay at a resort or they live in a neighborhood.

We supply a good part of water for the community in Placencia as well, so the water in Placencia is very good because of our project. However, since Placencia is still in a foreign country, most foreigners still drink bottled water.

When I go to restaurants or resorts in Placencia, I won’t bring my water but I might order a bottled water or sparkling water. There are great restaurants in Placencia, ranging from Italian to Chinese to Indian. You do not have to worry about getting sick because of the ice the restaurants use in your drinks. It’s more dangerous in Mexico. I’ve been down to Placencia maybe 80 to 90 times in 12 years and I’ve never gotten sick over water or food.

Placencia Peninsula, Belize, arial view – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingYes, it is safe to drink water in Placencia. It’s bit hard for me personally to drink it because I have a special sense of taste and smell. I studied perfume and cosmetics as a chemist.

There was a problem in Placencia because after the hurricane in 2001, so unfortunately they added a little bit of chlorine. Our water, along with the water in San Ignacio comes from the river. We are the only place that has real water that is not from the system. I prefer that they would not add that teaspoon of chlorine to the water, but it is safe. It just tastes a little different to me. The water in Placencia is potable.

You can drink the water straight from the tap here in Placencia. We have good clean water. It all depends on where you are. Placencia has very good natural water coming from the underground aquifer that runs parallel to the mountains, where all our water is from.

There’s an underground aquifer that runs parallel to the Maya Mountains, which is about 5 or 10 miles in distance.  The water that gets pumped from there is piped to the Placencia peninsula, so you can drink the water straight from the tap and it is very clean and safe.

There are certain areas in Belize that I’m sure do not have good water but I think overall Belize has very good, clean water. We have trees and plants and there is not a lot of big industries here so there is nothing polluting the water.
