Belize City is not a safe place. I would not recommend spending time in the city, but once you are in the island of Ambergris Caye, yes, you are safe. All of the islands of Belize are safe to the extent that you do not leave yourself wide open.

You don't leave your Nikon camera on your golf cart seat and walk away because it’s not going to be there in half an hour (and it wouldn’t be there in Canada, either). You should not leave your Samsung smart phone down on your towel, go for a swim, and expect it to be there. You might be able to do that in a resort compound with full staff and security, but most likely, there is a chance it might not be safe either because everybody passes through the beach. People need to be smart. They need to travel with sense above them, and if they do that, they will generally be fine.

Friendly bartenders that drink with you on Ambergris Caye, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingAmbergris Caye had some bad statistics on crime rate lately because Ambergris Caye is only a small island of about 20,000 people and the whole population of Belize is only about 325,000 people. For every murder that happens in Belize City, which is drug related, that is a big percentage of 325,000 people as opposed to 30 million people, which is the population of Canada. So our statistics in Belize in general and Ambergris Caye in particular are slightly skewed because of our small population.

Living on San Pedro in Ambergris Caye, or on Caye Caulker, you are practically safe as long as you are not a stupid tourist, who is walking around drunk with $100 bills sticking out of your pocket. Everybody needs to use a little common sense anywhere we go.

In comparison to Prince Edward Island in Canada, where I used to live, living in Ambergris Caye is safer but it also depends on what activities you are involved in. If you are involved in dealing drugs or if you are a 60-year old guy who has a 21-year old girlfriend and that girlfriend also who has a boyfriend, then you could get yourself into trouble.

We sold some properties recently to a 63-year old American lady who has a 28-year old boyfriend with “six-pack abs”. It is open season and people have a laissez-faire attitude down here. We have a lot of same sex couples that live together and nobody cares. Life here in Ambergris Caye is laid back.

Most of the crimes here in Ambergris Caye are petty crimes, such as breaking and entering when you leave your door open and walk out in the middle of the night and someone passes by and sees it they might go in and steal your computerSan Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International Living.  However, we don’t have crime like murder.  It hasn’t been a big issue.

I don’t really see a difference in crime between Ambergris Caye and Houston, where I used to go to school.  I feel completely comfortable walking down San Pedro or any other part of Ambergris Caye. I go out on occasion with friends and I come home at 2 or 3 in the morning.  They just drop me off.  I’m a single woman so I don’t tend to go alone. Even when I go to Houston I don’t go alone.  I’m a young woman, and I don’t feel threatened at all.
