Belize Adventist Junior College logo, Corozal, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingHere in Belize, we have a variety of religions but majority of the people here are Catholics.  There are people who belong to different religions such as he Adventists and Anglicans and they are all accepted. People here in Belize know how to respect another person’s religious belief.

There are some differences between the religions here in Belize. As an example, Catholics go to church on Sundays. They eat pork, shrimp, and they even drink alcohol. Adventists, on the other hand, observe the Sabbath so they go to church on Saturdays. They also believe in God and in Jesus Christ but they do not worship the Virgin Mary. Adventists have a different culture. You can tell by the way they dress. They do not work, cook, sell, or buy on Saturdays, either. They prepare everything on Friday.  People here in Belize know how to respect one another’s religions. Regardless of their religions, people remain friends with each other.

Jesuit Fr. Lynam with Catholic Knights of Belize c. 1910 – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThere is a mix of different religions here in Belize. There are Catholics, Presbyterians, Hindu, etc. The typical church that you will find in Belize is the Catholic Church. Catholicism is the biggest religious denomination here in Belize.

The Catholic churches here in Belize are very small compared to cathedrals everywhere else. We don’t have huge churches here. They are small, modest churches, which could hold a crowd of around 150 people at a Mass.

There is no shortage of churches here in Belize (there are lots of them) but they are small and with fewer people attending and they are less grand. Since the churches are small and less grand, people just tend to go to the church that is closest to their homes.

Sacred Heart Church in Dangriga, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingA typical Belize church is small. It’s normally a room and they have a guitar or an organ. There are not a lot of big churches here. In town (San Ignacio, in the Cayo District), there is one big church but that is about it. There is a cathedral in Belize City.

I’ve seen bigger and grander churches in Central America but that is because other Central American countries have larger populations. Don’t forget that Belize is a small country. I was in Guatemala City in February and I went into a beautiful, huge cathedral, but how many people live in Guatemala City? Millions live there compared to just 300,000 people living in the entire country of Belize. That is why the churches in Belize are typically small, especially in the districts. There is a pastor or a priest for every church here in Belize.

Generally, a bunch of the small churches are just rooms and have a congregation of about 30 people.   However, there are some mid-sized churches, like the one pictured, which is the Sacred Heart Church, in Dangriga, Belize.

church in Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingBelize has different kinds of religions. To name two, we have Catholic and Anglican. We are diverse in religion and most of the people in Belize are religious.

A typical Belizean church is smaller than a church in Los Angeles, but the people (especially the newcomers) are welcomed more by the congregation. Every Sunday in the Anglican church, the pastor asks the new members or anyone visiting to stand up and introduce themselves. Then the congregation is very friendly and welcoming toward them. After the service is over, the congregants come over to the new members and introduce themselves. Outside, the people walk around and talk to each other. The same goes for foreigners as it does for Belizeans. If you are an expat and you walk into a typical Anglican Belizean church one Sunday, you can count on the pastor asking you to introduce yourself.

San Anotnio church, Toledo district, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingIn Belize, there are a lot of Roman Catholic churches and you will see them all throughout the country. A lot of the schools will say “RC school” in their name, which of course means that it is a Roman Catholic school. There are predominantly a lot of families that were raised Catholic, and in turn, they raise their children Catholic here in Belize.

With that said, we also have Seventh Day Adventist, we also have Evangelical, Lutheran, etc. There is just a broad mix of different religious churches here in Belize. Predominantly, it is Catholic though.

Belize church rural – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingEverybody in Belize free to have has his or her own religion, but the first religion we have here in Belize is Roman Catholic. About 60 to 70% of the country is Catholic. The rest are Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Evangelical, or others who do not practice any religion.

Inside the churches would be rows of benches, a nice beautiful altar, statues up in the front and two big doors. The outside would just look like a huge chapel.
