Expats at Sanny's Grill, San Ignacio, Cayo District, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingSan Pedro (the principle town in Ambergris Caye) and Placencia are full of expats but here in the Cayo district, you will see them downtown in some restaurants but you won’t see them everywhere you go in San Ignacio. There are lots of expats here in San Ignacio but this is a larger area so the expats are more spread out. There are thousands of expats here but they are spread out over a large area, as opposed to how it is in San Pedro and Placencia where they are all in one place.

Generally, you would find expats here with no problem. When you get a meal downtown, you will see them there, having a meal or a beer.

An expat getting his house built at Cerros Sands, Belize – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingI have to answer this in percentage. I think expats are probably about 10% of the population of Belize. There are approximately 350,000 people in Belize now. But in Consejo Shores for example, there are a few Belizeans living there but it is predominantly expats. But the neighboring village of Consejo, the population is more than 90% Belizeans. In Cerro Sands, we have one two Belizean owners and the rest are expats. In Placencia, there is a lot of expats there and it’s the same thing in Ambergris Caye. I know they are not the majority in Ambergris Caye but there are many expats there. Many may not be there on a full time basis but are there on a part time basis or have ownership of a property there.

Generally, expats are likely about 10% of the population of the whole country and it may be creeping up now. That would be about 35,000 to 40,000 expats from the US, Canada, and Europe. In the expat areas, it may be a little higher, like 20 to 30% or more.

If you want to be around expats, you could find them in Belize everywhere.

I do not have the exact number of Canadians and other expats who live in Belize but I would say 60% of the expat population are Americans, 35% Canadian, and 5% are from elsewhere.

Lately though, people are saying that the whole population is 50/50 now. That is 50% expats and foreigners, and 50% locals. In total, Belize just has 350,000 people now.
