Food in Granada is quite inexpensive. When I spend around US $10 at the market I can feed three people with that. I can buy chicken or meat, cheese, plantain, and rice and I will have enough and plenty for dinner. I may even have something left to cook the next day.

I do not feel restricted with what I need at all. I spend around $300 every month on food and that is good enough to feed my whole family.

How much you spend on food obviously depends on what you choose to buy and maybe the brands that you choose. My wife and I prefer to live a non-pretentious, low profile lifestyle. We do not always buy top of the line products. We like local, normal food. We do not particularly look for a specific brand all the time. To give you an overall idea, a budget of $1,300 per month for my family’s expenses is good enough in my class. I do not feel like I have to budget everything just to manage my finances. $1,300 per month already covers food, clothing, and my car.

With a budget of $130 to $160, a single person can purchase food for a month.  This would equate to about $5 per day.

For many years Granada, Nicaragua did not have Typical plate of food from Granada Nicaragua – Best Places In The World To Retire – International Livinga good grocery market and you had to travel to Managua to buy things like peanut butter and zip lock bags. Now, we have two great supermarkets, both with many items imported from the United States. Of course, you will pay more for these type of things but on the average, daily staples are much less expensive than in the U.S. For instance, a beautiful head of organically grown red leaf lettuce cost about US 50 cents; fresh grown beans are 39 cents a pound; bananas are 4 cents each; a beer is $1.00.

The best thing is that all of the fruit and vegetables are fresh, the meat is not filled with hormones and chemicals and the bread is baked daily.  I have a family of four and I spend about $80 a week on groceries. Please bear in mind I have to have my Dr.Pepper sodas, Cheerios for my son, Nathan brand hot dogs (three times the price of standard dogs at $6 a pack) so my bill is a bit more than average due to all the imported items. Oh, but it is so nice to have a little taste of home every week.
