There isn’t racial tension in Nicaragua. This was actually surprising and wonderful for me to discover that Nicaragua has one of the most tolerant societies I’ve been to for diversity and acceptance of differences of all kinds—race, creed, color, sexuality.

If you’re driving through Nicaragua on the main road from Managua to San Juan del Sur, there are probably 2 or 3 locations and I also see it going north where there is a giant billboard written in the diversity colors and a multi-colored diversity flag colors that says something similar to, “Deserving of the right to equality, medical care, and to enjoy life.” This is part of a government sponsored program aimed at the transgendered community of Nicaragua but also focusing and broadening that to just be a diversity program, accepting all people as having equal rights for access to enjoyment of a healthy life, medical care and everything that’s needed. We see these giant billboards, which to me reflects the truth of the tolerance, acceptance, and generosity of the Nicaraguan people.

Expats exploring Nicaragua – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThere is racial acceptance in Nicaragua. People here are very curious. They would want to talk to you and understand where you are from and where they are coming from and what things are like where you are. Many local people here do not have the opportunity to get on a plane and see the world. Their way of understanding and learning about your culture, your race, and where you are from is by talking to you and asking you questions. So people here will want to know the answers to those things and understand what your culture is and where you are from. This is another reason why being able to talk to people in Spanish is going ingratiate people to you.

Racial issues exist anywhere in the world so Nicaragua is not an exception. There is racism here just as there is in New York and in Boston, in Beijing and Mumbai, so people here in Nicaragua are generally afraid of what they do not know just as they are everywhere else. You don’t see a lot of Chinese, Indian, or African-American people here so Nicaraguans have questions and are afraid of things foreign. But Nicaragua is no more racist than anywhere else in the world but to say that racism does not exist here would be silly because there is racism everywhere.

San Juan Del Sur is a very accepting town, much more so than anywhere else in Nicaragua, when it comes to accepting people of all races, people of all sexual orientation, or people of different ages and sizes. San Juan Del Sur is a very accepting town of all races and of all sexual orientations, which is a big thing. San Juan Del Sur is a progressive city. They’ve seen tourists from all over the world for a really long time. People here are liberal and open-minded to learn about people from other cultures, languages, and races.

kids running through the grass Nicaragua – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThere is racial acceptance in Nicaragua. It is actually a bit more accepting compared to the US. If you were a minority in the US and you went to live in Nicaragua, you don’t need to worry about being discriminated against. That shouldn’t be an issue.

I went to school here in Nicaragua and I had some Asian classmates of different backgrounds. There were Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, some high-society Nicaraguans, and some Americans, too. There is no racial discrimination here, but there could be some class discrimination, where if you do not have a lot of money, then it could be an issue, but that applies anywhere in the world.

Nicaragua is one of the most racially diverse countries not only in the region, but also in the whole world. In my own experience, being half Nicaraguan and half American, I very rarely feel any sort of racial tension. Racial tension is somewhat overlooked in this country. Personally, when I meet people, regardless if they are very dark from the coast, or if they are Ameri-Indian, Mestizo, White, or Black, I very rarely give it any thought further than the fact that we are all Nicaraguans in the same community. Race has very little to do with a person. We look more on how people carry themselves and their achievements as human beings.

Nicaragua gringo woman running in a field with Nicaraguan children – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThere is much less racial tension in Nicaragua than in other places. I am not aware of hardly any at all.

We do not see any discrimination here in Nicaragua. Even the gay population is more accepted in Nicaragua than in the States.

People of different races inter-marry and we do not see any issues whatsoever.

I do not feel like there is racial tension in Nicaragua. I think because I am Canadian it is less part of my culture than in other places. I think if you give it, then you get it back.

There are obvious differences between the expats and Nicaraguans but I do not feel that these differences create  an issue. Racial tension does not come up on any conversation as being an issue.

Nicaragua Carnival Queen 2012 – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingWe have much more racial harmony in Nicaragua than in the United States.  It is true that we have some people who will feel uncomfortable being next to someone of another color, but it is very, very rare.  The vast majority of Nicaraguans accept all people, regardless of their color.

Mostly, Nicaraguans are brown or black; dark.  So, it doesn’t make any sense that we would have any problems with race.  The Afro-American communities can feel comfortable going everywhere, as do the white people.

I’ve known of white people who were concerned about buying a home in the city or the country amongst many others who were not white.  There was no problem.  Nicaraguans have never had any kind of demonstrations against any group of any color.  It is a complete non-issue here.
