dogs in Nicaragua – Best Places In The World To Retire – International Living

I traveled several times with my tiny minpin and once with my Rhodesian Ridgeback to Nicaragua.

I had to get a health certificate and shot record authenticated by the FDA, I believe.  The exact process required is published online.  It was no big deal to get the seal.  I just showed up with a stamped health certificate and they stamped it after verifying my vet's stamp.

Once I got to Nicaragua, it was no big deal.  You just present the papers and then pay a "visa" for them to enter the country.  The process takes like 15-30 min.

Getting them back into the US was just as easy.  There was no problem once we arrived back home.  Customs just wanted to see the original health certificate and the new one, proving they originated from the US and were just coming back home.

Dogs on the beach in Nicaragua – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingYes, you can bring your pets to Nicaragua, and many people do. There are a couple of agencies that can help you and from my understanding, it is not a very difficult procedure at all.

It is also not painful or inconvenient for the animal. They have systems that are set up that make it very convenient to bring your pet into the country.

dog in carriage – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingYou can definitely bring your pets to Nicaragua. I know a lot of expats who have done so and are still doing that.

You have to organize your pet’s paperwork: their shots and veterinary records. Then you can pack them up and bring them down here to Nicaragua.

People love bringing their pets here, especiallysince most people treat their pets as part of their families, dog in carriage – Best Places In The World To Retire – International Living and wouldn’t leave them behind. There is a lot of paperwork required and there are certain shots that they have to get, but there is no quarantine. I have seen plenty of people who have brought their pets here and had no problems whatsoever.

Golden retriever dog in Nicaragua – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingYou can definitely bring a dog or a cat to Nicaragua, although we have plenty of dogs and cats here already!

To bring pets to Nicaragua, you have to get an approval letter and you have to prove that the dog or cat is healthy. People who tried to bring in some rare animals had some problems with bringing them to Nicaragua, especially, the ones who tried to bring birds, because the government does not want birds to start propagating here; some of the birds that they tried to bring in are not native to the environment.

The biggest problem that you might encounter with bringing a pet from the US (for example) is the airlines, because they are getting more and more strict. They now have rules whereby if the weather is at a certain temperature, then they won’t allow you to put the dog on that flight. They have regulations on the size of the animal, too.

YES!!!  You can most certainly bring your pets to Nicaragua and you do not have to quarantine most pets, such as dogs or cats.

Traveling to and from Nicaragua with your pet is relatively easy as long as you are prepared. Whether coming to or leaving Nicaragua, you will need an International Heath Certificate issued by a veterinarian and certified by the appropriate agency in your county of departure.  In the United States, it is the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and in Nicaragua it is the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAGFOR).

The only tricky part is the certificate is only valid for 10 days so plan ahead!

There is a company in Nicaragua that brings pets here from all over the world. They have different breeds of dogs that we don’t have here in Nicaragua like pugs or English bulldogs. They bring the pets here and breed them but I am not sure of the procedure on how they ship the pets. I think they hire some companies to take care of the shipping.
