Graphic for salsa dancing in Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingPanama has traditional dances. Our traditional music in Panama is called the Tipico. Tipico is very similar to the Colombian music because Panama was part of Colombia after we got our independence from Spain. If you ask a hundred Panamanians if they listen to our own traditional music, you would find that only the older population would say yes, while everyone else would say “No, we listen to hip hop and pop.”

A lot of the songs played on the radio in Panama are in English.  Others are reggae, which is from the Caribbean.  There’s Jamaican music, the Salsa from Cuba, and the Meringue from Dominican Republic. Panamanians love all types of music- rock, heavy metal, and many more. We have music for all tastes.

Folk dancing at Cubita, Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingPanama has a beautiful dance that is done by women while wearing their polleras (national clothing) called the punto. This is a traditional dance that represents how a man tells a woman that he loves her.

We also have many different folkloric dances here in region of Azuero. Young people in Panama still take part in these dances, as Panamanians are very cultural. So even the young people here still know how to dance cultural dances and they even know how to put on the dresses, as they are not the same in every dance. Each region in Panama has a different cultural dance but they are all beautiful.

Young people here in Panama still go to discos and movies, though. They also go to ferias (fairs). Panamanians like having fun, so you will see a lot of people go to the beach, the rivers, or even just to the movies, and fairs.

The dance of Panama is actually a fairly complicated question. Officially, the Panamanians have a music/dance style known as "Tamborito", wherein the audience forms a circle around the performers and clap and stomp their feet in response to the the lyrics of the vocalist, all of which is done in time to the beating of drums.

However, the Panamanians have also assimilated Salsa (specifically Casino Salsa), Rumba, and Bachata and have created (or some might say, still in the process of creating) their own fusion styles based on them.

The Panamanians live and breathe music. They will sometimes begin humming and swaying when they are waiting in line and might even choose to answer questions by quoting musical verses (as President Martinelli famously did).
