Panama birders on Pipeline Road after a night of rain – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingWe have six months of rainy season in Panama. It can rain a lot. I was in Boquete in 2011 and it rained 80 inches in six months. Some of the communities that are closer to the river bottoms did suffer some damage, but a lot of these communities were established in areas that they know could be problem because it is a rainforest and it can rain to 80 to 100 inches a year in some places.

We haven’t seen floods like from Hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua, but, yes we’ve had some major road closures and we’ve even had some scares with dams, but these are from 20 year storms. This is the worst that I’ve ever heard of but most of the expat communities and foreigners live on strong high ground and I’ve never heard of them having problems. Sure, we can get flash flood and water along the national highway, but at that point, you pull over to a safe place.

Once every blue moon, you have a place in Panama that can be flooded.  It’s not like it’s everywhere in the country; just in certain places.

Whether or not there’s flooding depends on where you live and the type of house that you have.  In the areas in Panama of higher poverty, there can be some flooding, depending how well the house is built, how much rain we get, and how close the house is to the river.  This doesn’t happen in other areas.  For example, my house has never been flooded.

Sometimes when it rains a lot, there will be some places in Panama City where there is a lot of water, but it is really very rare that it causes any problem.

Generally, flooding is not an issue the Villa in Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International Livingaverage person has to be concerned about in Panama.  There may be some flooding from time to time, but it is generally confined to the under-developed areas where they’re building right beside the rivers.

Any developed project that we have here at Tucan or at other better known developers or construction companies, will have engineers who are very familiar with how much rain we get and take great care in making certain everything is very well drained.

If there is a huge rain, you may get a little water, but it runs off quickly.

In Boquete, there have been a few issues with flooding in the town where people have built too close to the streams that go through town, so when there is a huge rainstorm, there can be one or two houses affected that are right beside the creek.  There was some flooding four or five years ago in Boquete, but the government of the town have since taken steps to correct that by deepening and straightening the river.

Yes, there are floods in Panama.   During the the end of the rainy season, which is typically November and early December, the rain can get heavy.

In Boquete the Caldera River is famous for a lot of destruction.
