Daryl Ries of Keller Williams Panama, associate – Best Places In The World To Retire User Account
Juan Williams, Fox News political analyst was born in Colon, Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingYes. There are American TV channels in Panama. You can watch almost anything in Panama. If you pay for it, you will get all the programs, and it’s not that much more expensive.

Now with a lot of new tech equipment coming on the market, you can literally turn on your TV and think you’re in the States. Right now without any problem you can get BBC, Fox News, and Showtime etc.. There’s panoply of global stations that also include CCTV from China, etc.

CSI television show promotion – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingPanama has a cable company called Cable Onda, which has several North American channels. On the basic package you should at least have HBO and some American channels. As soon as you take the next package up, you would have a couple of different ESPN channels, and a couple of different American channels. Then if you go to the top package, you would have HBO, Showtime, and everything else that you could imagine, with more American channels.

We also have boxes that you can buy that have every channel in the world that is shown in the US. The only time that you’re going to have a problem sometimes is when you’re in a hotel and they have the basic channels and you would see that most of the channels are in Spanish but there would still be something in English. Most people do not realize that if you take the remote control and go to settings you could turn about half the channels to English-speaking. Perhaps the last guest in the room was a Spanish-speaking person.

The American channels that we get here in Panama are not exactly the same channels that you would get as when you’re in Dallas but it is almost the same. In Dallas, I watch WFAA with the local news but here, I’m watching the same CSI show, just not in the same format and not with the local Dallas news.

Jeremy Irons interview subtitled in Spanish – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingYes, Panama television gets American and Canadian channels such as CNN, ESPN, Fox News, and HBO, and all the movie channels are all part of all the different cable providers’ packages.

Also, most of the cable providers in Panama provide an option on the TV where you can have the audio in Spanish or in English.  If you choose English, then the vast majority of your channels will be in English. Just to add to that, what a lot of expats like me do is to listen to my channels in English but I put Spanish subtitles at the bottom to help me improve my Spanish.

TV IN PANAMA

Anne Lorain, Latin American Idol star from Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingPanamá is privileged to be one of the leaders in high technology in Latin America.  Many very well known international corporations are represented here, offering all kind of deals for TV.

In the past, TV service was a monopoly, and service was expensive and selective, but since Panamá opened up their market, and more and more companies are interested in this profitable business.  As a result, service quality has improved and prices have become more competitive.

The local company that offers the majority of cable in Panamá is Cable Onda, which offers fairly good service.  Other technology companies are also represented.  The best known for different services are Cable & Wireless, Claro Com or Claro, among others.

As with everything, when you seek a specific service, take into consideration all your options.  Ask for references, prices, contract timing, penalties, etc.    Major companies
have offices inside the major malls like Albrook and MultiPlaza, to make it easier for customers, closing at 8 pm.

As for which channels are available, through cable you can get anything and everything you wish.  Companies have different packages available from which to chose,  depending on your needs. Your monthly price could range from US $20 to as high as $150, if you take the VIP package.  Sometimes certain services are covered separately, like special movies, or some selected channels.

In general, every home in Panamá has cable.  Sometimes is very difficult to get a good signal for local channels without cable.  The major companies offers applications that can be adjusted via your smart phone.

You can get American TV channels here in Panama if you have cable, but you have to check first with the cable provider to find out what American channels they have. I am not sure if you can get Canadian channels, though. We do have CNN, Food Network, Discovery Channel, etc.

If you live outside the US, several sites are blocked to you.

It takes a while to figure it out how to make providers think that you’re receiving your Internet service in the US. In the past, I used hidemyass dot com, which provides you with a virtual private network. This is a real company. (They have a great commercial with a donkey all dressed up.)

Basically right now we have Roku and then we have a VPN that specializes in streaming.  The streaming costs $5 a month and gets you Netflix and USTVnow, so you have a huge inventory.  And if you want to get Amazon Premium, everything you can imagine is available to watch.

I’ve recently witched from hidemyass to another provider the name of which I can’t remember.  Unblock Us dot com is the one that is special for in streaming. You get Unblock Us dot com and Roku and you are off to the races. Basically, the sites that would normally block you think you are using a server in the United States.

Being a Spanish speaking country the national TV stations re fully in Spanish. Many of the major hotels have a full host of US programs which they receive via satellite. As a resident and where available one can sign up for the satellite services which would have the English offerings. While in Panama staying at the hotel I have always found that the satellite service to be excellnt.

Basic Panama television will have many American movies and some TV shows, however they will all be dubbed in Spanish.  If you can hook up to cable or satellite TV then you can receive channels like the Sony or Warner Bros.channels that show many of the current American TV series, such as Grey's Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, American Idol, etc. etc.  They are shown in English with Spanish subtitles (a good way to help you learn Spanish).  They are also generally shown several weeks to several months later than they are shown in the US or Canada.

The cable and satellite TV packages also come with familiar channels such as MTV, Animal Planet, History Channel, Discovery, HBO, etc.  Most of these are available in English.  You simply have to program your system with your remote onscreen to audio in English.
