Holidays in the Isthmus of Panamá

Panamanians take holidays very seriously, as a great opportunity for each and every person to take a good family-oriented getaway trip to their country house, in total relaxation.  Panamanians love the word "holiday", mainly because is signifies the perfect time to have family time together.

The holidays in Coronado are the same as the rest of country, and are strictly enforced by law.  Sometimes certain holidays are observed on a different day, for a better opportunity to have a better holiday.

Traditionally, families have a second home for use on the weekend or vacations.  If they don´t own a second home, they rent one, or several families get together to enjoy it better.  Many families own either a beach house, like in Coronado, where a holiday is "the" place to go, especially for youngsters and teenagers.  But some families also have isolated cabins in the mountains, or with a nice hammock by a river, like in Pedasí, or even for use when hiking at the "Volcán Barú" (volcano) in Chiriquí/Bocas del Toro, where you can have an spectacular view in an area used by innumerable scientists, writers and nature lovers, due to the beauty of the scenery.

A holiday is also an excellent opportunity to follow the traditions in the "interior" of Panamá, such as folkloric studies, or the very singular religious processions in each town's Catholic church.  That devotion is primary during "Holy Week" in places like Atalaya, (Veraguas) El Cristo Negro ( Portobelo), Santa Librada (Las Tablas), with different religious activities for men and women.  Culture and tradition are  so much valued in all these towns.

Panamanians take all holidays very seriously, but here are some of particular importance:
  •   December 8  Mother´s Day (as Panamá also celebrates the Immaculate Conception Day, a very special day for locals)
  •  December 25 Christmas Day
  •  In 2014, April 19, but varying in other years  Good Friday.  Several days off, ending  at Easter... a very special day for Panamanians.
 Other holidays are:
  • January  1  New Year
  • January  9  Special local day
  • Usually in February, but varies Carnival (several days off)
  • November 3, 5, 10 and 28 Independence days. Usually several days  off.
  • May 1 Labor Day
  • August 15  Special day:  Foundation of the city of Panamá).
Additionally, due to locals are always looking for that special occasion to get together with no reason needed to have a good time, every day is a holiday in Panamá.   After all,  who makes a holiday... if it´s not the person themselves?  It's their choice to make a "holiday" happen and be happy all the time-- at work, at home,  in a hammock, or everywhere.
