In one word, the shopping in Coronado, Panama is: excellent.  And that is one of the biggest draws to Coronado; its convenience as the shopping mecca of the Pacific coast. There is now, at last count, 4 supermarkets in the 4 adjacent malls, and each offers a wide but different range of products and prices.

There’s a lot more, other than the groceries.  There are appliances, kitchenware, hardware, cleaning and paper products, pharmacies, prescription and vitamin counters, and everything you would expect from a supermarket back home, including fresh meat, chicken and fish counters.... and take away.

I think its a good bet that anything you buy in the USA you can get here in Coronado, Panama, in addition to the local products and those from Central and South America and China. When you live in Panama, you are at the home of the Panama Canal and there’s a free trade agreement between the USA and Panama, so there is no tariff on the USA products.

Parking lots stretch out along the mall streets, where restaurants are abundant, offering snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hairdressers, spas and even casinos fill out the rest of your day. There is more coming too... so if I missed something on your list, rest assured it will be there, if not now, soon.

Almost everything you need to buy is available here in Coronado, Panama, so, for most things, you don't have to leave the area to go shopping.  If you need furniture or lighting, however, you can go to Westlands Mall.

Westlands Mall is located in Chorerra, 40 minutes from Coronado, before you get to Panama City.  It's about 3 years old and has everything. Now that Westlands Mall has been built, we do not any longer have to go to Panama City for anything.  Westlands Mall has a movie theater and all kinds of shops, electronic stores, furniture shops, and a pharmacy. In fact, the condominium that I bought last year was furnished with things from that mall. I did not have to go to Panama City to shop for anything I needed.

It is nice to go shopping in Panama City or to dine at restaurants, but if you just need to get things done, you don’t really have to go to Panama City any more.

Do It Center Employees in Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingThe shopping in Coronado, Panama used to not be good. When I moved here eight years ago, we had one supermarket, but now we have four. We have one mall, which just opened up. You can get anything you want now in Coronado and it's just about to get better.  We've got like a Do It Center here, which is like a small Home Depot.  We have something similar to a Sam's Club, which is called PriceMart here about 35 minutes away..

We have a little mall in Coronado. However, 35 – 40 minutes away, in Chorerra, there is an unbelievably large mall where the PriceMart is also located called Westland Mall. It's huge, about the same size as the malls in the US. It has beautiful tile floors, which are kept spotlessly clean. You actually wonder with most of the people being poor here how they manage but the mall opened up and it is a success. I am a businessman, so I look at it, and I think, “How is this going to work?” But it works and it is just the same as walking into Sarasota Mall in Florida. They do know their demographics.

Shopping in Coronado has only gotten more and more expansive over the last ten years, and it will continue to grow.
  • They are currently finishing up a new shopping center there now.
  • You can pretty much find anything you need in Coronado, even a casino, if you like to chance the slots.
  • There isn't a shortage of pharmacies, and definitely no shortage of grocery stores; the four largest chains all sell there.
  • There are plenty of hardware stores for the do it yourself person, and a good number of appliance stores as well.
  • If you are a pet owner, you can have your pet checked out by one of the three vet clinics.
  • If you like to indulge yourself now and again with fast food, we have a McDonalds and KFC to choose from. There are also some Panamanian fast food joints.
  • There are at least eight banks in the area, and a pawnshop for those tight times, or if you just need to transfer some cash to someone you can easily.
Coronado offers all the modern conveniences you are used to, and looks to keep up with the times.

Metromall in Panama – Best Places In The World To Retire – International LivingEverybody talks about coming to Panama because it is cheap. When they stay that, they are referring to the Free Zone in Colon, which is where you can shop duty-free. That is a place you would go to if you are coming from Costa Rica or Colombia maybe to buy televisions, DVD players, computers, etc. to take home.

If you would go shopping outside of the Free Zone, you can go to Panama City, where there are several malls. There is Metro Mall (pictured), which is by the airport, Multi Plaza, which is near Punta Pacifica in Panama City, and there is Albrook Mall, which is enormous. We also have Westlands Mall, which is 40 minutes outside of Panama City, heading towards the Pacific Beach areas, like Coronado.

We now have a lot of international brands here in Panama City such as Gap, Mother Care (from the UK), Zara and Mango (both from Spain), and some local stores like Felix B. Maduro. If you go to Multi Plaza, you will find Chanel, Tiffany & Co., Carolina Herrera, and other designer brands. You will find basically everything that you want here in Panama City, from the cheapest stores to the more expensive stores.

Regarding prices, I find the European brands tend to be more expensive than they are in Europe so I only shop for them when I go home, but otherwise, prices in the local stores tend to be very reasonable and the American brands are just slightly more expensive than they are in the US. Gap, for instance, is about US $10 to $15 more to buy in Panama than in the US.

If you go to Coronado, you will find DIY (“do it yourself”) stores and a couple of supermarkets. They also have some clothing stores but you they do not have the big brands that you will find in Panama City.

If you live out in Boquete or other parts of Chiriquí Province, which are closer to Costa Rica, then you can go shopping in David, where they have big supermarkets and Arrocha, which is a big pharmacy. You will find the bigger Panamanian chains in David (the largest city in Chiriquí Province). But if you want a bigger variety of clothing, you would have to come to Panama City for that kind of shopping. There are also some small local boutiques in Boquete where you would certainly find something nice to wear. I bought a bikini when I was in Boquete before.

In Pedasi, they have only local boutiques where you will find some beachwear and some small stores that sell cotton dresses. They don’t have the chain stores that you will find in town (Panama City).

In Bocas Del Toro, being that it is on or close to the beach, you’ll find the stores sell mainly beach gear, surfing gear, or hippie trousers and cotton beach dresses.

Certainly most people and most expats come to Panama City to shop if they want something specific.

Coronado now has a great deal of shops, grocery stores, etc. The new Riba Smith grocery story is small, but has a number of things that aren't carried in the other 3 big grocery stores in Coronado. The prices are higher at Riba Smith, but the quality is excellent! The other 3 include: Machetazo (like a Walmart of sorts, 3 levels which include groceries, some clothing, school supplies, some sporting equipment, etc.); Rey grocery store - excellent; Super 99 - (great meat market).

There are also many outdoor vendors who sell fresh pineapples, papayas, tomatoes and other local produce. I tend to buy as much as I can from them before shopping in the larger stores, as it is usually cheaper and it supports local entrepreneurs.

As far as clothing, I typically still shop in Canada, the USA or Panama City. I am tall with size 10 feet, so it's not always easy to find things that fit me very well in Panama.

There are grocery stores in Coronado, Panama, but if you really want to go shopping, the best place to go is Panama City. There is a beautiful mall there called Multi Plaza where they have top stores like Gucci. If you do not want to go to Panama City, you can go to Westland Mall, which is around 40 miles away from Coronado. Once Westland Mall is done, it is going to be the largest mall in Central America. Westland Mall is a modern mall and you do not have to go to Panama City for shopping because they have everything. There is a Conway there. They also have a DoIt Center, which is like Home Depot.

They are also starting to build smaller malls a little bit further to the west in places like Costa Verde, which has a Rey grocery store. There is quite a bit of building going on between Coronado and Panama City, and because a lot of new homes are being built, they also have to build shopping centers.

I do not go shopping that often though, because there is nothing I need. I once had a meeting in Multi Plaza in Panama City and I got there early so I walked around this mall looking at all the stuff I didn’t need!

We’re very lucky now because there are a lot of new shops that have opened up in the last year and a half in the Coronado, Panama area and there are many new shops that are planning to open.  A year and a half ago, there wasn’t a lot of variety here in Coronado but now we have four major supermarkets that are to North American standards, including a gourmet store and a health food store.

There are lots of hardware stores and two housewares stores in Coronado.

As far as buying clothes in Coronado, there’s one little department store that has some cute things.  If someone wanted to come in and open a cute little clothing store, that would be a great business. So, there’s still a little lacking here in the clothing department.  However, we have the Westland Mall, which is about 45 minutes away and that has hundreds of stores with nice clothing.

Westland Mall is a big mall with mostly Panamanian stores, with a handful of stores that North Americans will recognize.  For example, there’s a Sketcher store and a Polo store. But every time I go in, there’s a new shop that’s open.  Westland Mall is really big, but it’s still expanding and hasn’t filled up yet.

Westland Mall is located in Chorrera, in between Coronado and Panama City.  It’s basically opened up to serve the expanding suburbia of Panama City, towards Coronado, right off the Inter-American Highway.

Of course, anything you want, you can find in Panama City, with 4 malls and just over an hour away.

Five years ago when we first arrived we had one 24 hour grocery store.  That has increased by 300%.  We now have 3 major grocery stores, a Machetazo which I call the Walmart of Canada with 3 floors, clothing, great groceries, furniture, appliances and electronics.  In one month the Coronado Riba Smith a higher end grocery store will be opening in the Novey Plaza.  The Novey is a Home Centre store with linens, construction supplies and general house wares and camping gear.  We no longer need to go to the city on a bi-weekly basis.  Everything we need from car parts to produce is now offered in Coronado....along with 8 banks. :)

Coronado is the only beach project on the Pacific that has four (4) shopping malls in the entrance area where you can find all items you need: clothes, drug stores, furniture stores, food courts, 7 banks within walking distances and three (3) big supermarkets chains and one more to come. Stores like Home Depot, Best Value (similar).  For these reasons, you can find anything you need in Coronado.

With respect to prices, they're the same as in the city.  Most of the residents in the area travel to Coronado to do all their shopping.

If you are planning to settle by the Pacific, you do not have to worry about shopping!!!
Everything is in these malls!!
